Math in Art
This lesson was done with on of my 4th-6th grade special education classes but can easily be modified to an older grade or kept fairly similar for a younger grade. This was part of a larger arts integration curriculum, the students were learning additive and subtractive properties in math class and so I catered this lesson to that skill. Over the course of a 4 week lesson, we covered additive art, subtractive art and positive/negative space. These topics helped the students understand the math content better but also to reinforce their understanding that it is a useful skill that appears in different subject area. It was also a valuable way to introduced new artistic vocabulary and discuss how different artworks are made. The students completed a paper sculpture, a paper cutting and a variation of a tessellation project for each of the topics discussed.
