 inkblot monsters

This lesson is a digital take on a typically 2D activity. This is originally done with real ink splattered on to paper and then designed into silly and creative characters. There are several inkblot patterns that were created for this lesson but ultimately, students could find or make their own depending upon the program used. My class was using Pixlr, a free online tool that is essentially a photoshop copycat. The tool works great for what it is, but does lack some functionality. Students used my provided inkblot patterns and then used Pixlr to edit other photos which added contributions to their monsters. There are so many options for what to create and it goes by fairly quickly. This lesson was short and sweet but could also be turned into a comic lesson or be used as an introduction activity.

tips

Using Pixlr is awesome. It is a free website that does not require students to make an account. It works in a pinch (like virtual teaching!) but is also great for sending practice work home.

For this lesson I suggest using my provided inkblot downloads to make the process easier, if using Pixlr. If you're using Adobe, they are just standard Illustrator brushes and they worked great!

For searching for monster parts, have students use "clipart" or "cartoon" as terms to help them find objects with clean white backgrounds.
