One Point perspective and surrealism

This unit is a condensed  6th grade unit which studies surrealism and one point perspective. My 6th graders have art everyday for 7 weeks (35 school days) and so I teach them 3 units where I pack as much information in as I can.

This unit combines Surrealism and One Point Perspective and gives them a technical practice for both ideas. I also chose my own arts for them and linked many videos and images for student examples, etc. 

​

I have found that this project is an excellent first project. For me, I get to see what they are capable of drawing wise and for them, they get a chance to use their mathematical skills and also be as creative as possible. 

​

For themes I have gotten everything from underwater, space, my room, to football fields.

Technical Practice and timeline

For this assignment, I begin with the surrealism presentation. Then we look at the Artists and then we begin a short 2 day project creating Surrealism trading cards and characters out of magazine cuttings.

Then we talk One Point Perspective, and then we look at two practice worksheets. Then we finally begin the room drawing on large drawing paper. We work together to create the room and then they use 5 days of solo worktime to create the interior and color.

Learning Target

I can  demonstrate  my openness in art class by drawing a one point perspective room and reflect my intrestes through surrealism so that I can be successful in class. I will know I have it when I am proud of my room and 75% of my line lead to my vanishing point.

Artist Inspiration

This lesson was inspired by 2 surrealism artists: Jee Young Lee and Michael Manalo. Lee is from South Korea and makes scenes in real life. Manalo is from the Philippines and creates digital surrealism characters and scenes. Both are currently living and working, which makes them relatable and interesting, non-white artists.
